Water Benchmarks was created to bring rigour andindependent evidence to a critical market:AI in water treatment.
Water is a basic resource, and the decisions taken in its treatment carry direct risks for public health. AI tools are entering the sector quickly, but reliable, independent benchmarks remain rare — and in a domain this critical, adopting a tool on the strength of a marketing claim or a polished vendor demo is not good enough. This project grew out of conversations with plant teams that wanted to know what actually works before trusting it with something this essential.
Today, Water Benchmarks is a collaborative effort powered by plant operators, engineers, researchers and builders who believe in open, practical evaluation. Our benchmarks are shaped by water professionals, AI experts and researchers who care about using AI responsibly in the water sector and assessing it through real-world use cases.
Our mission
- Provide water teams with unbiased, practical insight into AI performance
- Build benchmarks shaped by the people using AI, not selling it
- Share real-world findings that help water teams adopt AI safely and effectively — in a sector where errors affect a basic public resource

On anonymity
Governance and advisory are named publicly. From v2.0, scoring is done by a validated LLM judge panel — so reviewers no longer attribute scores to vendors, and the people who shape the reference truth can stand behind it by name.
